ViVian Maier's (PLA$TiC)
(project preview :)
We are living on the future’s tab. My most recent image series Vivian Maier's (PLa$TiC) uses Vivian Maier's original physical negatives as a canvas to comment on the existential threat currency poses to earth and everything on it. These negatives, each a fragment of history, have been physically and digitally reworked, transmuted into artworks that are born from the paradoxical unity of the manufactured and the organic.
Each work in the collection encapsulates a landscape of materials - plastics, polyurethanes, chemicals, precious metals, as well as earthen and biological materials. This blend of substances is not chosen at random but is a deliberate commentary on the perils lurking within our current epoch and sixth mass extinction.
The dangers I allude to are not natural disasters or external threats, but those conjured by human hands. As Homo Sapiens, we have indelibly marked our planet, often at the cost of its health and ours. The Earth and everything on it is steeped in poisons of our lives - plastics, chemicals, chemicals off the plastics, etc. My art serves as a stark mirror, reflecting back the consequences of our choices and actions. A mirror that is made from the same poisons we find in our own homes.
At the heart of these actions, I assert an existential threat that has been sparked and perpetuated by our species - the deification of currency. The relentless pursuit of and reliance on wealth and economic growth, continuously disregarding the environmental and social impacts, threatens not only our species but the intricate web of Earth's natural systems and other forms of life we share it with.
The damage we've inflicted upon our world is so severe that it has subtly pervaded the everyday lives of individuals in our modern societies. Our daily routines, which further deplete the precious resources necessary for sustaining current and future life on Earth, are eerily normalized, inducing a state of cognitive dissonance. This state of mind conveniently overlooks the pervasive influence of currency on our world.
Every artifact born of our modern society bears the mark of profound despair and tragedy. Our objects, touched and used in our daily lives, are not just commodities. They are symbols of the human impact on our world - a testament to the cost of our actions on human life and the Earth as a whole. The beautiful structures that we have created as a species and the things that we create and fill them with are poison for us all. We are living on the future’s tab.
